What Is Cataract Surgery?

Cataracts are a fairly common, however, they can become progressively worse. At the beginning, you may not have noticeable symptoms. You might have blurry vision, regular prescription changes, or dry eye. However, if cataracts are not treated, they can lead to blindness. At Atlantic Eyecare in Virginia Beach, VA, we provide cataract surgery to help you see clearly and preserve your vision. You can learn more about this procedure below:

What Causes Cataracts?

A cataract is a cloudy lens, which can occur due to a variety of causes. Proteins and fibers that are naturally found in your eye can break down, leading to blurry vision. Some causes of cataracts include:

  • Age
  • Genetics
  • Eye injury
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Previous eye surgery

While cataracts cannot be prevented, it is important to consult with our optometrist about surgery if the cataracts are interring with your day-to-day activities.

What Happens During Cataract Surgery?

Cataract surgery is a relatively safe and quick surgery. The procedure is generally painless and only lasts about an hour. During the surgery, our optometrist will remove the damaged lens and replace it with an intraocular lens. There are 3 simple steps to the surgery:

  1. Our optometrist will numb your eye with specialized numbing drops
  2. Small tools are used to break up the lens so that it can be removed
  3. The artificial lens is placed onto your eye

You may need to spend a short period in the recovery room, but you will return home the same day as your surgery. While your eye may be sensitive at first, you should feel better in a day or two.
